US Special Envoy Expresses Concern Over Attack on Baghlan Mosque and Challenges Faced by Shia Community

In a recent development, Thomas West, the US special envoy for Afghanistan, strongly denounced a tragic attack on a Shia mosque in Baghlan province. He highlighted the immense hardships endured by the Shia community, victims of “violent extremism.”

Mr. West’s statement carried a profound message: “Afghanistan’s Shia community has borne an unjust burden from the scourge of violent extremism.”

In addition to the distressing attack on the mosque, it was reported that the Herat region experienced a series of earthquakes on a Sunday morning, further aggravating an already challenging humanitarian crisis.

Mr. West emphasized the crucial importance of ongoing support for relief organizations as they strive to meet the pressing needs of the Afghan people. These needs encompass essentials like shelter, access to clean drinking water, vital medicines, and more.

The tragic event in question involved a suicide bombing within the walls of the Imam Zaman Mosque in Pul-e-Khumri city, situated in the heart of northern Baghlan province. This brutal act resulted in the tragic loss of at least 17 lives and left 30 others wounded. Notably, the Taliban reported a lower casualty count, estimating seven individuals affected by the incident.
