One fateful night, in the stillness surrounding Mount Tur, God bestowed prophethood upon Moses, giving him an extraordinary mission. His first directive was clear and daunting: confront Pharaoh.
“Go to Pharaoh! For indeed, he has exceeded all bounds in disbelief and tyranny.” (Quran 20:24)
Years before, Moses had fled Egypt, fearing for his life. He had spent a decade in a foreign land, far removed from Pharaoh’s reach. Now, God commanded him to return and face the ruler he feared most—the man who would likely seek his execution. The memory of his flight and the burden of his past stirred fear in Moses’ heart. He turned to God with his apprehensions.
“My Lord, I killed one of their men, and I fear they will kill me.” (Quran 28:33)

With humility, Moses prayed fervently, seeking strength and clarity. He asked for an open heart, eloquence, self-assurance, and a steady resolve. “Moses said, ‘O my Lord, expand for me my chest (grant me courage and contentment), make my task easier for me, and untie the knot from my tongue so they may understand my speech. And appoint for me a helper from my family—Aaron, my brother. Strengthen me with him and let him share my mission so that we may glorify You abundantly and remember You often. Truly, You are ever observant of us.’”
God replied, granting Moses’ requests and reminding him of the divine care he had received throughout his life.
“You are granted your request, O Moses. And We had indeed shown you favor before. Recall when We inspired your mother, saying, ‘Place him in a basket and set it afloat on the river. The river will cast him ashore, where an enemy of Mine and his will take him.’ I enveloped you with My love so you would be raised under My watchful eye. Your sister then suggested, ‘Shall I direct you to someone who can nurse him?’ Thus, We returned you to your mother, calming her heart and relieving her grief. Later, you killed a man, but We saved you from distress and tested you through various trials. You stayed in Midian for years before arriving here at the destined time. O Moses, I have chosen you for My revelation and mission. Go, you and your brother, with My signs and do not falter in remembering Me.”
God commanded Moses and Aaron to approach Pharaoh with kindness, hoping he might heed the warning and reform.
“Go to Pharaoh, for he has transgressed. Speak to him gently, that he may take heed or develop fear of God.”
Despite their fear of Pharaoh’s wrath, God reassured them of His constant presence.
“Fear not. I am with you, hearing and seeing. Go to him and say, ‘We are messengers from your Lord. Let the Children of Israel go free and do not torment them. We bring proof from your Lord, and peace is upon those who follow guidance. It has been revealed to us that punishment awaits those who deny the truth and turn away.’” (Quran 20:25-48)
