The Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Amina Yakubu, a 100-level student of Yobe State University (YSU), who tragically lost her life in a road accident near the university’s gate on Gujba Road.
In a statement issued on Sunday by his Director General of Press and Media Affairs, Mamman Mohammed, Governor Buni described the incident as a heartbreaking loss not only to the family of the deceased but also to the entire university community.
“My heartfelt condolences go to the parents, friends, and relatives of Amina, as well as the Vice-Chancellor, staff, and students of Yobe State University. This is indeed a painful loss of a young and promising student. As Muslims, we take solace in the belief that life and death are determined by the will of Allah, the Almighty,” Governor Buni said.
The governor prayed for Allah’s mercy upon the soul of the late student, granting her eternal rest in Aljannah Firdaus, while also asking Allah to comfort her family. He further directed that those injured in the crash receive free medical treatment at state health facilities.

Buni also used the occasion to caution motorists and other road users to exercise patience and vigilance, particularly during the rainy season when road conditions are often hazardous.
Police Confirm Cause of Accident
According to the Yobe State Police Command, the accident occurred on Saturday due to traffic diversions caused by ongoing military operations in the area. The diversions have forced motorists into a single lane, often leading to congestion, impatience, and frequent crashes.
Police spokesperson, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, confirmed that the incident involved a tricycle and a vehicle, resulting in the death of Amina and serious injuries to four others, including a university matron.
“Unfortunately, Amina was among the tricycle passengers. She sustained severe injuries and later passed away, while others are currently receiving treatment,” Abdulkarim said.
University Community in Mourning
The Acting Vice-Chancellor of Yobe State University, Prof. Bukar Jamri, also extended condolences to Amina’s family, describing the tragedy as a painful blow to the institution.
“The safety and well-being of our students remain our top priority. We are deeply shaken by this loss, and our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased and those injured in the crash,” he stated.
The university community has since been thrown into mourning, while Amina Yakubu has been buried according to Islamic rites.
