LAGOS, NIGERIA — In a truly inspiring display of interfaith learning and academic excellence, 9-year-old Muritala Desmond, a Muslim pupil from Salem Baptist International School, emerged as the overall winner of the 4th edition of the Primary School Bible Competition organized by the Bible Society of Nigeria (BSN).

Held at the Salvation Army premises in Onipanu, Lagos, the competition brought together young minds from across the state to showcase their understanding of Biblical teachings and moral values. Desmond, a Basic 4 student, achieved an outstanding score of 100%, edging out runners-up Phoebe Fashola and Success Olawoyin of Grand Royale School, who tied with 90%. Anabel Onyekwere Ogechi Ogbogu from Angels on Mission School followed closely with 85%.

This year’s edition featured participation from 17 primary schools across Lagos State, with six institutions advancing to the finals. Despite facing cultural and religious differences, Desmond’s determination and love for moral teachings helped him excel. “We committed one hour every day for Bible study with our teachers,” Desmond shared. “That consistent effort prepared us well.”

Desmond’s journey wasn’t without challenges. Raised by his grandmother following the loss of his mother, he initially faced some resistance at home. Yet, his passion for understanding the Bible’s moral lessons remained unwavering.

Mrs. Barwa Adeyemi, a teacher at Salem Baptist International School, described Desmond as a focused and spiritually curious child. “He is from a modest background but shows maturity and a deep interest in spiritual values. His win is well deserved,” she said.

Grace Benjamin, Production and Programmes Manager at BSN, emphasized that the goal of the competition is to instill Godly virtues in children at an early age. “We want to raise children who understand and live by strong moral values. Early exposure to Biblical principles helps them grow into responsible and ethical adults,” she noted.

Benjamin explained that the competition questions were based on My 100 Best-Loved Bible Stories. Schools were invited to participate through social media and direct outreach.

Beyond academics, the event offered students a chance to learn and interact in a new environment. “These competitions help shape children holistically — academically, morally, and socially,” Benjamin added.

Participants didn’t leave empty-handed. They received school supplies, Bibles, educational tools like Scrabble and learning games, as well as medals and plaques awarded to their schools.

While celebrating the competition’s success, the Bible Society of Nigeria also appealed for more support. “We wish we could do more — offer scholarships or expand the program. But financial limitations are a major hurdle,” Benjamin said. “We’re calling on Nigerians, churches, and organizations to join us in encouraging these young minds. Just as secular contests offer prizes, we believe children excelling in moral and spiritual knowledge deserve similar recognition.”

This year’s edition was not just a contest — it was a powerful example of unity, shared values, and the role of education in building a more harmonious society.
