The ancient city of Kano came to a standstill on Saturday, June 29, as thousands gathered to honour the memory of one of Nigeria’s most respected business icons, Aminu Alhassan Dantata, who passed away at the age of 94.
Dantata, a renowned entrepreneur and philanthropist, breathed his last in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, on Friday, June 27. In accordance with his final wishes, his remains were transported to Madina, Saudi Arabia, for burial.
A solemn Salatul Gha’ib (Islamic funeral prayer in absentia) was held at the Umar Bin Khattab Mosque in Kano, led by Sheikh Ibrahim Khalil. The event drew a massive crowd of mourners from various walks of life, including Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin and other distinguished personalities.
Speaking during the prayer, Sheikh Khalil described Dantata as a man of deep faith, unmatched generosity, and unwavering dedication to public service. “He was a rare gem who used his wealth and influence to uplift others,” the cleric said.

Dantata’s longtime associate, Mustapha Junaid, confirmed his passing early Saturday. The news quickly spread, prompting tributes from leaders, community members, and organizations nationwide.
Born on May 19, 1931, into the prominent Dantata family, Aminu followed in the footsteps of his father, Alhassan Dantata — a legendary merchant known for his business acumen. Aminu Dantata carved out his own remarkable legacy, becoming a towering figure in Nigeria’s economic and philanthropic landscape.
In public service, he served as the Commissioner for Economic Planning and Development in Kano State from 1967 to 1972. He also made history as the inaugural chancellor of Al-Qalam University, Katsina, contributing immensely to the institution’s vision and growth.
As a visionary entrepreneur, Dantata founded Express Petroleum and Gas Company Limited and played a pivotal role in the establishment of Jaiz Bank, Nigeria’s first non-interest financial institution.
His philanthropic impact is equally profound. He was a leading force behind the Kano State Endowment Fund, aimed at supporting education and empowering small-scale businesses. His generosity extended to the healthcare sector, funding vital projects such as the Alhassan Dantata Haemodialysis Centre and supporting operations at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.
Until his passing, Dantata remained a cornerstone of Nigeria’s business elite, with investments spanning construction, manufacturing, banking, agriculture, and oil and gas.
As news of his death continues to ripple across the nation, many Nigerians remember him not just for his wealth, but for the humility, compassion, and community-centered values that defined his long and impactful life.
