MOSCOW, May 15Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today held a significant meeting with Russia’s Grand Mufti, Sheikh Ravil Gaynutdin, marking a pivotal moment in fostering deeper Islamic cooperation between Malaysia and Russia.

The meeting took place shortly after Anwar’s official engagement with Russian President Vladimir Putin, underscoring Malaysia’s commitment to strengthening religious diplomacy alongside political and economic ties.

In a statement shared via his official Facebook page, Anwar emphasized the importance of reinforcing brotherhood among Muslim communities across Malaysia and Russia, despite geographical distances and cultural differences. The dialogue also aimed to build stronger connections with Russia’s 25 million-strong Muslim population.

“We explored various areas of mutual interest, from enhancing Islamic institutions and promoting knowledge exchange, to supporting the growth of Russia’s halal industry through Malaysia’s globally acknowledged expertise in halal certification,” Anwar noted.

During the meeting, Anwar expressed his gratitude for Sheikh Ravil’s leadership in promoting interfaith harmony and fostering unity within Russia’s diverse society.

“Such efforts are invaluable, especially in a global environment increasingly challenged by division, prejudice, and rising Islamophobia,” he added.

As a gesture of goodwill and to support global Islamic outreach, Anwar presented Sheikh Ravil with a copy of the Holy Quran accompanied by its Russian translation. This act aligns with Malaysia’s MADANI Government initiative to distribute one million Qurans worldwide, aiming to promote a better understanding of Islam and counter misconceptions about the religion.
